The 2 MOST important things you can do as a blogger

I have quickly discovered that blogging just like real life takes two things happening to make it work. Both things are easily handled, but with the number of blogs that fall by the wayside I believe the vast majority of people don’t do either thing. Perhaps because they aren’t serious about blogging in the first place, or maybe they just don’t realize how important these two things really are. Whatever the case I’ve decided to layout them out for you and I have little doubt once you read this you’ll understand exactly why these two things are so important.

Number 1: Planning
A Blog about Nothing - Battle Plan
The importance of planning when it comes to blogging can’t be overstated. Just like anything else in life planning is an essential element to the success of a blog for a number of reasons.

  1. It allows you to have both short and long term goals
  2. You are able to more easily write articles if you plan what they are about ahead of time
  3. It allows you to prioritize your blogging time
  4. You are able to get things done much quicker
  5. It enables you to know when you’ve completed a task

Number 2: Setting goals
A Blog about Nothing - Goals
If you don’t set goals for yourself in blogging you’ll quickly find that you are getting nowhere fast. One day you will look at various stats and realize that you’re still stuck on square one. Goal setting is probably one of the easiest things you can do and yet it is so easy to overlook. Consider the following when setting your goals.

  1. Divide your goals into short term and long term goals to make things more managable
  2. Figure out why you are setting each particular goal and write it down
  3. Publicize your goals. Fear of public failure and derision is a poweful motivator
  4. Use the S.M.A.R.T formula when setting goals
  5. Revisit your goals on a regular basis to measure progress
  6. Set your goal high enough to be worthwhile, but not so high as to be unattainable

There you have it as promised. The two most important things a blogger can do and what I hope are some convincing reasons to do so. As always I have a few questions for you before I let you go.

  1. Do you plan ahead or is everything spur of the moment?
  2. If you do plan how far out do you plan?
  3. Do you set goals for yourself with your blog and if so what are they?
  4. Do you agree or disagree with this post?

Do you plan ahead or is everything spur of the moment? Spur
If you do plan how far out do you plan? N/A
Do you set goals for yourself with your blog and if so what are they? Nope
Do you agree or disagree with this post? I agree, but have wild time constraints, and just fit a post in when I can.

  2. Hi Eric, thanks for answering the questions! I used to do it spur of the moment, but with my “wild time constraints” I’ve found it much more efficient to plan things out.

I’ve been seeing so many articles on this! Thanks for the tips :)

  4. Zmoney - I think these kind of articles are popular because they are “timeless” truths when it comes to blogging. It just helps to have a fresh perspective from more than one person.

I plan my post both for long term goal and short term goal. It is important if you want your blog to be coherent and relevant.

But I do spur of the moments post too! It is fun, spontaneous a rides the current wave - as long as it is still relevant to my niche.

    Cheers

  6. James - I generally write out several topics I want to cover at the beginning of the week. As the week goes on I take a look at them and if they still appeal to me cover them, and if not I set them aside for another time.

I generally try to post 2-4 articles a day and believe me a lot of it is spur of the moment stuff that I cobble together in 15-20 minutes. Otherwise I’d run out of things to write about for the week if I only used the stuff I had planned.

    Hey A Blog About Nothing,

We are the opposite creatures when it comes to blog planning :P

I usually plan a theme for a series of posts. The one I completed last month (after a 28 post spanning 2 month) was on life transformation. A new series I started last month centers around self improvement for employees.

Spur of the moments do interrupt it now and then but usually inspired by events that I encounter or experiences that I gained at that moment or any world event/news that is somehow related.

Every week, I will give a variety of post from show casing other peoples articles and humor to return link loves via blog intros :)

    Cheers
    James

  8. James - Yeah it sounds that way. I’m very spur of the moment about pretty much everything in life. I do plan to some extent about blogging and other things, but I doubt you’d see it as planning. In reality I’m not so sure that I see it as planning.

I like the SMART formula in setting goals. I actually remember taking a class in college that covered this topic. How funny 20 years later I run into it again. I am inspired to post about it. lol. ;)

  10. Chessnoid - You know it’s amazing to me that you had to have a college course because I simply looked it up on the internet to learn more about it than I would ever need to know. Sometimes it amazes me how much information we now have at our finger tips.
