NY Giants vs NE Patriots Superbowl XLII

January 21st, 2008 | by Brook Durant |

Superbown XLIII need to disclose a few things before I say anything.

  1. I live in the middle of “Patriots country”
  2. I’m not a fan of the New England Patriots
  3. I’m not really a fan of football in general anymore
Patriots
Now that I have that out of the way even I have to acknowledge they hype surrounding the Patriots. Something I hadn’t really done until now for the simple fact that I wasn’t sure if the regions collective ego could contain itself much long. Well judging by the idiots I passed tonight they won’t have trouble with their ego outgrowing their capacity to handle. But like I said now I’m even going to acknowledge the hype. If you look up the word hype in the dictionary you’ll see that it basically means to create interest in something by flamboyant means. Most of the time when you hear the word hype you think of something being overhyped. Well after watching the Patriots vs the Charges yesterday afternoon the word overhyped seems pretty fitting. I’ll go on record as saying that the Chargers beat themselves because judging by what I was seeing the Patriots weren’t doing it.

Mind you I’m not trying to be an armchair quarterback, but some of Brady’s mistakes make one cringe. Most glaring is the fact that he gets intercepted 3 times. In one game. Moss was a complete non-factor the entire game. Remember the Dallas Cowboys and Michael Irvine? Randy Moss is the premier receiver in the league and not one game, but two in a row now he’s been shutdown. When Irvine was the premier receiver he wasn’t shutdown to the extent that Moss has been. Aikman, and Irvine would keep working at it until they were able to break him loose and he became a factor. I watch Moss and Brady and I’m astounded by the fact that they run a few plays and then go to something different. Nor that it matters Moss or not the Chargers beat themselves.

Giants
I listened to a portion of this game on radio but from what I heard the Packers beat themselves. From what I was hearing there was a lot of three and outs going on because Farve was making some pretty crappy play calls. Overall I’m disappointed as I was hoping to see the Packers vs the Pats for the superbowl, but in this matchup the better team certainly won.

I’m not really a giants fan but they certainly played the better ball and deserve the spot in the superbowl that they’ve secured for themselves. The game would have been totally different if Brett Farve hadn’t been trying to relive his passing glory days. As one commentator doing the play by play on radio said, “He’s no spring chicken”. 8 or 10 years ago he was a premier quarterback, but now he’s become an afterthought at best.

The game
Patriots by 2 touchdowns and a field goal. The Patriots simply have too many weapons to defend against and it is almost impossible to match them down for down and score for score.

How about your thoughts on the games?

    Hi There!
I was checking a contest site we are posting our contest at and noticed your site. The name was intriguing, so I clicked. (Who can resist nothing?) I see you’ve already made a prediction, here’s a way to turn that prediction into a new recliner:
    Superbowl Contest
That’s our contest page where we’re giving away a reliner to one person who picks the final score of the game. If we don’t have an exact winner, we’ll just draw a name from all the entrants. Good luck!

Dave - Interesting Dave, but what do I get for letting you advertise your contest on my site? You’ll notice that I removed the link to the contest.

That’s a good question . . .I guess I figured since we’re giving the recliner away including shipping, (absolutely no cost and no purchase required by participants), that it would be considered valuable content. Don’t you think it’s something your readers would like to know about? You, of course, don’t have to keep any of my comments, I just wanted to give you a personal invitation to participate in the contest as you seemed to have some interest in the game and you’d posted your own contest on a contest site. If we find that we get a decent amount of quality traffic from your site, we’d be happy to sponsor you or pay for an unbiased review. There’s some potential for some ongoing support here if your site proves effective.
    Sincerely,
    Dave

Dave - Actually it was just a friendly question. I don’t mind at all but I figured that I should at least make the link a little neater instead of a big ugly url.

Well - thanks for making the link neater, it def. looks better. Our offer stands; if we find a decent amount of quality traffic coming from your blog, we’d be interested in sponsoring your site.

    Sincerely,

It is pretty obvious that the Pats have already been determined to be the winners of Super Bowl XLII. The Giants deserve an Academy Award for their performance against the Pats a few weeks ago because they actually looked like they were trying to win the game. I’m sure this was difficult since they could easily have beaten the Pats if the game had not been predetermined. The Packers, on the other hand, couldn’t have looked any more obvious that they were handing the game to the Giants but I guess we can’t really expect them to be good actors, now can we?

Elise - Huh? So you’re telling us that the whole thing is some kind of a conspiracy to “hand” the Pats these games? What are you smoking?

Well almost any college team and even some high school teams in the country could have beaten the Pats in the last game. If I wanted to call that team “Football’s Perfect Team”, I would have to be smoking something. I suppose that’s why people drink so much when they watch football, so they are too drunk to notice how bad these guys really are.

Elise - Perhaps so, but the professional team didn’t and that’s really all that matters. But tell me Elise, who’s YOUR team? Because you certainly have a hatred for the Patriots. Name your team so we can all see where your jealousy rises from.

I don’t have a hatred for any team and I have no jealousy. I don’t have any professional team that I would call MINE. I prefer to watch college football because they play their hearts out to win unlike the pros who are just collecting a paycheck.

Elise - College athletes play “their hearts out” to get noticed by the pro scouts. Winning is just another feather in their ego caps. Don’t be fooled for a moment into this “love of the game” garbage.

I guess I was wrong and the Super Bowl wasn’t fixed otherwise a crappy team like the Patriots would have won.

Elise - The better team on that particular day won. Just like every other game. Nothing more, nothing less. The Pats have been the better team for 18 games. That’s all there is to it.

I think the host on FOX put it best at the end as they were signing off when he said, and I quote, “… destiny disrupted…” I laughed out loud because it mean we fans of other teams don’t have to listen to the 2 “D” words this year (Dynasty & Destiny, or “Perfect” for that matter!). Belicheat is not a man of character, and he has no gracious bones in his body. And Brady and Moss staying home from the Pro Bowl just shows how little class they have. Sore losers! I teach my kid better than that. Yes, others in the past have done it, but that makes them sore losers, too!! Injury is the only reason to skip the Pro Bowl. It’s a game of honor, something Brash Brady knows nothing of.

Eddie - I’m not a Pats fan at all, but I can’t help but think all this bashing going around (both before and after the superbowl) is because of peoples desire to see the “big guy” get taken down.

I remember when it was the Cowboys and the Forty-Niners dealing with the same kind of bashing. Once they became mediocre teams the focus drifted elsewhere for teams to bash.

As far as the probowl goes… who cares? Does anyone even take that game seriously?

ABaN - Some players are always looking for an edge (performance enhancers) but the coaches are not supposed to do those things. Yeah, the “Boys suffered from Michael Irvin bad press, and Jerry & Jimmy had a blow-up, but filming the other coaches so you can steal their signals? I’d be embarrassed as a fan. And I know people got tired of hearing “America’s Team”, too. And if no one cares, how do they aford to sell tickets to the Pro-Bowl and pay T.O. & Romo $40,000 EACH for being on the winning team? Think about it. Superbowl losers don’t care about the Pro-Bowl. Romo went last year and this year after heart-breaking losses trying to reach the Super Bowl. At least “Terrific Tom” and “Rowdy Randy” made it to the Super Bowl, which I thought was a boring game for 3 quarters and then they go and call it the “Best Ever”? Not in a million years.
