Review: The King Kong Blog
Overview
When I think of King Kong two things come to mind. First a kick-ass and don’t bother to take names “because I’m going to decimate you so why bother” monster, and second the most brain numbing 3 hours of pain I can remember experiencing recently. If you saw the 2005 remake you’ll know what I’m talking about. The King Kong Blog is in a lot of respects like it’s namesake. Though not nearly as boring.
The owners/writers of the blog tout it as a way to earn some extra cash… and potentially solve all your tech problems and cravings. I’m not sure how it does on the money earning end and to this point I’ve not had reason to make use of it’s tech solving abilities, but I can honestly say the more time I spend reviewing and researching the blog the more I’m beginning to enjoy it.
The Good
First of all let me say this. I find this blog to be entertaining. From the style of writing to the videos to the pictures. The gibbon with the ipod photoshopped to it’s arm cracks me up. And the sad part is I really don’t know why. I also find the blog to be informative regarding tech type things though if that’s the avenue they are going for they could definitely use more of that kind of content. One thing that struck me is how much these guys push contests. Other blog’s contests. I think it’s great that they have such a sense of community after being around for less than a month. In fact they definitely pour on the “link love” thick and juicy never missing an opportunity to mention the hard work of others. There is one last thing I want to mention. This blog has what I consider to be perhaps the greatest avatar ever in the header. That monkey looking back over its shoulder is awesome!
It should be noted that they have their own contest going for a copy of FINAL FANTASY XI Vana’diel Collection 2007, with all the expansion packs which I encourage all the gamers out there to check out. And if you aren’t a gamer check it out anyways and show these guys some support!
The Bad
Like always we get down to the ugly at this point. Remember when I said this blog was like the remade movie it takes it’s name from? I was serious. It is both explosive and uh not so explosive at the same time.
The Concern: Grammar, spelling, and punctuation – Those three things are almost non-existant on this blog. We all expect and have a certain amount of leeway that we give others in making these kinds of mistakes, but this is so bad I was starting to wonder if they did it on purpose. My suggestion is to run things through a spell checker before posting it. If you don’t have a spell checker the Firefox web browser offers a built in one. I hate to nitpick about this kind of thing because it is pretty close to the pot calling the kettle black, but it was so bad at some points that I had to force myself to keep reading.
The Concern: Feed links – We all want people to link to our feed, but why have a button for each and every possible service. I noticed they are using feedburner for their feed. I suggest just have the main feedburner icon as it will link to all of those options. That would save some screen space for something that might generate some revenue.
The Concern: Slow loading page – I think this is due to some of the advertisements so I can’t rightfully ding these guys to much, but it is something they might want to keep an eye on. Remember even in todays world not everyone is on broadband and if I (who is on broadband) notices a slow loading page you can bet the dial-up users will notice it even more.
The Concern: Contact email links – They don’t work. I tried emailing using the direct click link 3 times to each address and each one bounced back. When I copied and pasted or typed it manually it worked fine. The email links look like this – http://thekingkongblog.com/contact-us/myusuf_05@hotmail.com and I’m not sure if that’s on purpose trying to do some kind of tracking or accidental, but until it is fixed I’d just go with the normal Email us type of link.
Conclusion
Despite my best efforts not to I found myself enjoying The King Kong Blog. When I first started looking at it I thought it was just a cheap gag sight ripping off someone else. And it is, but these guys make it work! I will certainly be back for more and I encourage anyone else who might have been hesitant about spending some time there go ahead and do like I did, after all monkey see, monkey do!
