4 Reasons why I stumble your article

Stumble UponIn recent days I’ve become a more active member of Stumble Upon. Essentially what that seems to mean is that for some very strange reason people want to be “friends” with me and that I get a lot of stumbles “just because”. Mind you I’m in no way complaining about it I’m just a little surprised is all. Pleasantly surprised.

I wouldn’t say I’m a star stumbler, or even a 5th string farm league rookie stumbler by any means but I have learned a few tricks along the way. So before I go any further I’d like to acknowledge a few of the people who taught me so much about Stumble Upon via various articles.

No doubt I could continue on with several more articles but those are a few of the main ones that come to mind. I encourage everyone and anyone to read them at least once. Needless to say I read those and many other articles and began to slowly employ some of the principals taught in them. Which leads me up to my point. Why I stumble YOUR articles (or not).

It interests me
You’d think that this would go without saying, but I have a feeling it doesn’t. If your article doesn’t interest me at some level I’m not likely to stumble it just because I happen to read it. Something will need to compel me to stumble it.

You’re one of my “friends”
On a daily basis receive requests from my SU friends to stumble their content. Not everyone gets stumbled as I do actually read the article in question and I value my so-called reputation enough not just to whore it out anymore. Yes I used to participate in a lot of “stumble exchange” traffic scheme websites. That was before I knew that building a strong community of fans is really the only way to go.

I learn something new from it
For me this is a huge reason I stumble. Because it tells me about something I didn’t know about before. You’d think that I would do nothing but stumble my time away however if it doesn’t interest me while teaching me there’s no point in me stumbling it. Sadly this is the case with most articles I read. I learn something new, but it really wasn’t something I wanted to learn or enjoyed learning. It was boring.

It’s in the “What’s New” section of Stumble Upon
A few times a day I will stumble things in the “What’s new” section. Just the first 5 or 6, but these I don’t worry to much about if they interest me or not. I simply read the article, write a review and stumble it. No more, no less

There you have it. Four reasons I will stumble your articles. This isn’t an all inclusive list, but it is the four main reasons I stumble sites. Very quicly let’s break it down.

  • Make it interesting
  • Be my friend (please!)
  • Teach me something
  • Catch me at the “right time”

Why do YOU stumble articles?

I stumble a lot. Nearly everyday and probably 30-50 stumbles per day. Ok, maybe it’s not a huge amount of stumbles but it could easily be more. In this article you’ll find ways to increase your stumbles. These methods can be used with any social book…

I love Stumble Upon for the wide exposure to sites like this that I would never have found on my one. Thumbs up for you.

  8. Nice tips there. I’ve been using stumbleupon for a while and the traffic is pretty trivial until after someone writes a review, that’s when it spikes.

I’ve used SU for about a year now and definitely what makes me rate it is the content. It doens’t have to be some brilliant thing but if it’s solid I will give it a thumbs up. If I really like it, I will write a review.

I still wonder if it’s true that if you stumble your own site more than 15 times it gets knocked off stumbleupon and all stumbles after that by yourself is not counted.

I use Stumble Upon more than any other social networking site. I think it’s helpful to edit your preferences as to what blogs or site you are interested in seeing while Stumbling, otherwise it’s nothing but random stuff.

After editing my preferences on Stumble Upon, I now find lots of blog sites that I have not only given a thumbs up, but also have subscribed to. It’s a fabulous tool for bloggers, everyone should be stumbling.

Stumble is a great tool and lots of fun. I wish I’d read the TOS before proceeding to stumble every single post I’d ever written! Now I’m much more Stumble-savvy and am trying to build up a quality list of Stumbles.

I’ve found a LOT of great blogs and other sites on Stumble.

I just joined the Stumble universe. I assume that “stumbling” a site is when I press the “I LIKE IT” button?
Yep, I’m a major novice! LOL
I have looked into incorporating the stumble button at the end of my posts, but there are just no reliable plugins for Blogger. (yes, I should move to my own domain and will soon)

ANother problem: I can’t install the Stumble toolbar on my work ‘perputer, so I can only stumble at home…but most of my web surfing happens while I pilfer time from my company! LOL)

  14. Allyn – I consider stumbling to be anytime I use stumbleupon to reach a site OR have been referred directly to a sight for the purpose of stumbling it. It doesn’t matter if I thumb it up or down I’ve still stumbled it.

Sorry I can’t help you with blogger. I have a few blogs on blogger but rarely mess with them. One is hard enough to maintain.

  15. Ms. Latina Renee – Thanks! Done.

The Guy Who Knows A Pigeon Called Frank – Glad you found it useful.

ses5909 – If at all possible I will write a review. Sometimes I just don’t have time. If I give a thumbs down I always write a review.

esvl – I have no idea. I don’t worry about it too much. I think “discovering” your own site might get you penalized but don’t see why stumbling it after it already has been would.

Lin – Good point. You should always edit your preferences so they reflect your… preferences

JD – Personally I think it is silly you can’t stumble your own site. After all how will it ever get discovered? My best stumbles have come on articles I’ve written that I’ve either “discovered” or asked someone else to discover. If I hadn’t done that I can almost guarantee no one would have seen them, but once people saw them they apparently liked them enough to stumble again and again and again…

@ esvl I got into trouble and my account temporarily deactivated by them. Evidently it is against their Terms of Use to self submit. They track the number of times you promote a single site.

They did reactivate after a little hand slap :-)
