I love blogging!

December 1st, 2007 | by Brook Durant |

Loved!I was busy researching and writing another article to post for the building community series I am working on when something occurred to me. I really and truly enjoy blogging. I’ve always liked writing, but blogging is different somehow. It’s more like writing op-ed pieces day after day.

No experts here
A blogger doesn’t need to be an expert at what they talk about. Fact of the matter is that a very tiny percentage of people who blog would be considered experts in their niches, or fields of interest. By no means am I an expert about the things I blog about yet people still come and read what I have to say. They still chip in with their opinions and comments day after day.

I couldn’t help but wonder why that is. If you read a book with instructional information you expect EXPERT advice. Not good advice, not sensible advice, but expert advice. The very moment you realized the author wasn’t actually an expert you’d be quick in line to get your money back. Don’t shake your head, you know it’s true!

My gut instinct is that we are so much more lienent with bloggers than other “experts” because the vast majority of us are not experts. We simply have opinions and ideas, some better than others, which we want to share with the world. Blogging gives us the perfect avenue by which to do share those things.

No subject is taboo
I can write about whatever I want to write about and not worry about offending anyone. Not because I’ll never write anything offensive, indeed sometimes I strive to be offensive to some people. I don’t need to worry about offending people because if they are offended they know exactly how to leave.

I agree with what you’re thinking: That sounds more than a little cavalier and harsh. It is, but you should also consider it from another perspective. If I limit myself to writing about things that don’t offend people, or writing in a manner that doesn’t offend people what is the point? Why bother trending only on safe ground without ever ruffling a few feathers here and there. Have you ever read Shoemoney? He’s made an artform out of not giving a shit. He’s my blogging hero!

So in short if you’re blogging don’t be scared to write about whatever you feel a desire to write about. Some people get themselves so bound up in a niche focus that they lose all perspective. From time to time branch out and make the taboo things your “bitch”

I don’t expect much
From myself that is. I expect nothing from my readers. Because they owe me absolutely nothing. I never lose sight of that fact. They are here at their pleasure, not mine… As I started to say I don’t expect much from myself. I don’t need to! We’re talking about blogging right now in case you’re wondering… I can write what I want, when I want, and how I want and not worry if it is “good” or not. If I get 20+ comments or get 0 comments it doesn’t change what I’ll write or how.

Of course I always try to provide you with the best possible content I am capable of, but let’s all be honest for just a second. Sometimes our shit really does stink! I’m not proud to admit that, but I’m just being real. Sometimes I hit the publish button, read what I’ve written and wonder what in the hell I had been thinking. Then of course I leave it there because I’m too lazy to make any changes to it. Some of you are the same way. I know because I’ve read some of the crap you write. 95% of your stuff is pure gold but from time to time you float a big turd out into the middle of the blogosphere pool.

Don’t expect much from yourself. Have fun with it. You’ll screw up because you’re not perfect. God is perfect, but you aren’t!

Can you see why I love to blog now?

It’s nice to know it hasn’t yet turned into a “have to” for you. It has the potential to really turn into work if we’re not careful…although if you really love it, why not make a living off it?

JD - Because I love it as a hobby. If I had to work and earn a living from it I would quickly come to disdain it.
