And the winner is!

December 3rd, 2007 | by Brook Durant |

KO!Without further ado I’d like to announce the winner of A Blog about Nothing’s $50.00 blogging challenge. Actually I’m lying. In order to make this whole thing a little more interesting I thought I’d point out some of the entries that didn’t win and why.

  • Antigrammar - Um, because that’s just scary
  • A Frog to Kiss - The idea wasn’t original AND more importantly you can get some excellent header images custom made for you over at the DP forums
  • Lost in Technology - Lacking in originality and I’m not a fan of pyramid “schemes” lol
  • Rotus - While I appreciate the sarcastic wit it missed the technicality mark. That being “What would you spend it on to improve your BLOG?”
  • Zybron - This was a pretty common entry/comment for this contest. Buy a domain name and move to a real self-host Word Press solution. Again not original
  • Home Life - Didn’t follow the rules (no link back to the contest page). If you need a domain name you can definitely get one for far, far less than $35.00. Namecheap can provide you one for about $9.30 per year

Those are the ones I didn’t select. I hope none of you mind the back link I’ve provided and the fact that I told everyone why you didn’t win…

Who won? Steve O of Window on Life is the new owner of $50.00 for this post about using it for Youtube video posting. I will be attempting to contact Mr. “O” via email and/or his blogs contact information. Congratulations Steve! I realize $50.00 in the big scheme of things isn’t much but I’m looking forward to hearing how your idea works out!

In case anyone is wondering why Steve won it’s simply because his idea was not just original but pretty damn good if you ask me!

Actually that would be a reverse pyramid scheme. Since I would be losing out on it. But I digress.

And that was a bit offensive buddy not much of a critique. Probably should be a bit nicer to people supporting your contests. Maybe a thanks for input? Just a thought.

I agree with Brent. How is buying crap from ThinkGeek original? That’s basically what the person who won said he would do, and uh, last I checked, uploading videos on YouTube was free, (and he’s using all of the “crap” from ThinkGeek to “enhance” his blog, yeah ok). A bit offensive? Really offensive. We took the time to write a post giving you a backlinks and you 1. don’t thank us and 2. Insult those of us who entered. Besides, I at least would have used the money for a header/logo for my blog, not on crap and would have been thankful for it.

Brent - Critique? I didn’t say I was going to critique why. Only that I would say why. And the thanks was in the backlink I provided to your blog and others.

Beth - Fact is he had the most original and creative idea whether you think it was crap or not.

    Hi there!

Oh, so sorry. I never noticed that one of the things lost together with the comments, was the link to your contest. If you have read one of my entries, I have mentioned that I have done a “trial and error” method in changing my template since I am not so familiar with it.

By the way, the 35 dollars domain fee is a one-time payment (lifetime) by the way. Thanks.

    Fact is not opinion.

Fact: a concept whose truth can be proved.

Opinion: a personal belief or judgment that is not founded on proof or certainty.

And the fact of this is you did critique. Just the negative side. What you should have did was say.. Good thought, but I would have did XYZ different. You can do what you want.

It is subjective. You have to the right to be subjective. Go ahead, be subjective and don’t thank the people that supported your blog in your post. I just thought it would have been nice to just say thanks for all that supported/contributed/entered.

Just felt like a low blow.

Overall I think this was a good contest. Found some cool blogs and saw the true colors of this blog.

Brent - Where are you coming up with this nonsense about fact and opinion?

Fact: I chose the entrant that I liked the best.

    Fact: My choice was subjective.

Fact: I didn’t say the entries were “bad” just that they didn’t win and I gave my SUBJECTIVE opinion as to why.

Fact: The results aren’t up for debate they are what they are.

Fact: You and others don’t like the results. That’s ok too.

Fact: Not everyone certainly but you I thanked in your comments for joining the contest AND I provided a backlink in this post.

So tell me, Brent exactly what did this “greedy mind” gain that you and the other entrants didn’t? We all got some more exposure and we all got some links. One person gets $50.00 and I’m “out” $50.00. What did my “greed” gain me?

As I stated before the thank you was in your comments and the thank you was in the backlinks.

I’m not here to quibble or argue simply pointing out that you’re taking great offense to something you really have no reason to take offense at. But hey at least you and a few others have given me an idea for a new post, thanks!

Karen - Lol, yeah I am the first to admit I learned something from running this little contest. I made mistakes certainly. One being that I assumed people would want to a) hear why they didn’t win and b) not be coddled when told. Now I just need to figure out where I went wrong. Telling or not coddling some of them.

Homelife - $35.00 for a lifetime? That’s pretty good. Actually that’s excellent! Sorry you missed the link back requirement. Despite what some people think the contest wasn’t all about linkbacks, but without them how would it get advertised and how would I have known who entered?

Sorry I’m late to the party. I brought a bag of chips.

Thank you for holding this contest. I sort of figured that I was self disqualifying with my entry but that’s what I do.

I would like to say thank you for selecting my entry about creating stop motion animation stories using actors for ThinkGeeks inventory, and using them to create linked traffic to my blog from YouTube (and/or other video sites). I’m glad you liked it. I guess now I have some storylines and scripts to create.

Again, thank you for the contest and a big thank you to Karen for Twittering about it.
